BUILDINGS

In 2009, UPB moved out of two buildings in North Salt Lake and consolidated into one new, 70,000 square foot building attached to our Finishing building.  This new building was designed from the ground up with the environment in mind.

Lighting: The building has sun tracking skylights with GPS units that track the sun all day long.  This is called daylight harvesting and at 10 am all the T-5HO overhead lights in the building go to 50%. That’s when the sun trackers assist in lighting the building allowing us to make use of bright, sunny days.

Heating/Cooling: The building has a lot of extra insulation at R-35. We rarely need all of the radiant heat or master cools (high efficient evaporative cooling units) running at once.  Atop the building is a 40kWh solar array that provides 20% of the building’s total power needs.

Landscape: The all new landscape is xeriscape saving thousands of gallons of Utah’s most precious resource: water.

Building/Structure: Our builder used Nucor Steel’s American Building for the walls. Nucor’s steel comes from recycled auto’s and so the steel in the new building is 90% recycled automobiles.

Future Building: As we begin to look at the final phase of getting under one roof (building our new print building) we will be LEED certified and will begin construction in July this year.  Turns out there are LEED points for recycled steel.  We think that’s pretty cool!
