In late 2012 through early 2013, UPB moved it's corporate office from our 340 West location
to our new home on 920 South 700 West. Our seven year quest to be under one roof will be complete by our 100th birthday in 2014. The building exceeds our expectations in many ways and is very green! In fact it is under LEED review for Gold!
The building is 30% more efficient than a standard building and uses 621,760kWh less power a year. We are in the process of moving the printing presses out of 340 West and the move should be complete by this Summer.

In 2012 we again added 17kWh of production, this time on the roof of our new LEED certified
headquarters. This brings our output to 67kWh. The rooftop of the new building is re-enforced
for solar, so over the coming years we will add to it!

In September of 2010, UPB completed its second phase of our solar installation tripling the array to 40kWh!  We again worked with Park City-based Utah Solar to do the installation and it was complete in about three weeks.  This will most likely be the final installation on the roof of the Rigid building since we would have to reinforce the roof to do any more. Soon, we’ll be working with a new roof on our print building that’s all spec’d out for panels.  That said, thin film solar is coming around quickly . . . so you never know.

Output for the new system is impressive: based on what the 10 kWh system did in the first year, we estimate this system will make 68,200kWh per year or about 20% of the building’s occupants’ needs.  This will offset more than 91,200 pounds of CO2 that is given off when 4,700 gallons of gas is burned.

UPB believes in all forms of alternative energy, which is why we bought a 1,806,000kWh block of wind power on Earth Day 2010.  This block was purchased through Renewable Choice ENERGY out of Boulder, Colorado and is a two year commitment.  Between this block of power and our solar production, 50% of the power we use is alternative power. Since our first instillation we have seen the cost per watt cut by more than half, solar is getting cheap!
