History

Utah Paperbox traces its roots to 1914, when the company was known as Union Label Company. Purchased in 1922 by George Keyser—and renamed Utah Paperbox—the company's primary focus for the next five decades was the rigid box business. In the 1970s, however, emphasis shifted to folding cartons and UPB added offset printing and platen (Bobst) die cutting to its capabilities. The rigid division moved into a new command center in North Salt Lake in 1984. And, although rigid box production remains an important business component, substantial growth arrived via the folding carton sector; in the 1990s, folding cartons accounted for 85% of our company’s business. To celebrate the new millennium, UPB entered the litho-laminating business, considerably expanding packaging options for our customers.

At Utah Paperbox, the emphasis has always been on family—both in ownership and employees. The Keyser family actively continues in UPB operations. Paul Keyser (third generation) is the current CEO. His son, Steve Keyser is the current VP of Sales. Several second- and third-generation families are currently involved in UPB management and manufacturing, and the plant boasts two fourth-generation employees. Keyser family members desire to keep things intimate and hope to one day see a fifth-generation Keyser in our packaging business.
