Specialties

Main line equipment builds millions of cartons for UPB's customers each year, but it is our special equipment that sets us apart. These machines, used in combination, allow UPB to produce unique yet affordable rigid boxes, litho lam cartons and regular cartons.

Rigid Division

The first Emecci Mechatronic in the western United States was installed in mid 2005. This is a quick set machine that produces unusual shapes.

Folding and Litho Lam

Our high-speed Steuer stamping press placed in operation in early 2006 is at least 2 1/2 times faster than Bobst Stamping presses. This allows regular stamping to become more affordable. Its unique foil drive system saves up to 30% of the normally wasted foil. In addition, it can stamp solids that can be printed upon. That means on a box where only part of the area is covered with foil, the carton can be up to 50% less expensive than a solid laminated foil box.

In late 2005, UPB installed a Bobst Alpina 145 high-speed convertible gluer. Its convertibility means it will run corrugated litho lam equally as well as regular cartons at very high speeds. It has greatly reduced the waste normally encountered with running litho lam cartons, while functioning at higher, more economical speeds.

UPB has a unique window machine: a Hieber Shroder which employs sheet-fed windows that are pre die cut. Since they can be shaped to the box, the window becomes a structural part of the box. With regular windows, the material has to be thin and cannot be a structural part of the box. The Hieber Shroder allows larger portions of the box to be window, increasing product visibility.

The most unique piece of equipment at UPB was installed in early 2005. It is the MAN Roland 707+. The PLUS stands for Perfecter, Lacquer, UV, and Specialty coatings. The press can print the back of a sheet and then up to 7 colors on the front at speeds up to 12,000 sheets per hour. The press can be run as a regular IR or aqueous coating press; it can run strictly as a UV press, on all stations. And lastly, it has a first down coating unit followed by two dryers. That means a specialty coating can be laid down, instantly cured, and then overprinted by up to 6 colors. This press is unique in our market and can produce boxes of almost any imagined combinations of disciplines.
